dc.description.abstractToinvestigatethephytochemicalsandtheanticonvulsantactivityoftheethanolleafextractofCulcasiafalcifoliausedinthetraditionalmedicaltreatmentofepilepsy.Methodology:ThephytochemicalscreeningwascarriedoutusingstandardprotocolwhiletheanticonvulsantactivitywasstudiedusingPentylenetetrazoleinmice.Result:ThepreliminaryphytochemicalscreeningcarriedoutontheethanolextractofCulcasiafalcifoliarevealedthepresenceofalkaloids,flavonoids,saponins,tannins,polyphenols,andglycosides.Intheanticonvulsantactivity,therewasasignificant(*p<0.05,**p<0.01)increaseinthemeanlatencyoftonicconvulsion(243.72±6.90*,402.56±5.52**)andsignificant(*p<0.05,OriginalResearchArticle Portiaetal.;ARRB,29(1): 1-7, 2018; Article no.ARRB.428442**p<0.01)decreaseinthemeandurationoftonicconvulsion(192.62±7.72*,158.99±8.66**)inadose-dependentmanneratthedoseof200and400mg/kgbodywt.respectively.Theextractat400mg/kgbodywt.showed100%protectionagainstmortality.Conclusion:TheresultsofthisstudysuggestthattheethanolleafextractofCulcasiafalcifoliapossessesanticonvulsantactivityinPTZinducedseizureinmiceen_US
