Responses of slenderleaf rattlebox (Crotalaria ochroleuca) to water deficit
(2017)Water deficit affects plant growth and development thus affecting crop productivity. It is the major a biotic stress experienced in the vast semi arid and arid regions of Kenya and the world as a whole. Water deficit ... -
The role of Kenya in the trans-african spread of maize streak virus strain a
(Elsevier, 2017-03-15)Maize streak virus (MSV), the causal agent of maize streak disease (MSD), is the most important viral pathogen of Africa’s staple food crop, maize. Previous phylogeographic analyses have revealed that the most widely-distributed ... -
Screening Of a Selected Tomato Varieties for Response to RalstoniasolanacearumINMASENO, Western Kenya
(Journal of Agriculture and Veterinary Science, 2020-06-08)Tomato (Solanumlycopersicum) is an important horticultural vegetable crop among small and large scale farmers in Kenya, grown for its nutritional and commercial purposes. However, gains from its production is limited by ... -
Screening of Sweet Sorghum (Sorghumbicolor (L.) Moench) Varieties for Sugar and Biomass Production
(Springer India, 2013-09-01)Sweet sorghum has elicited the interest of breeders due to its capacity to provide renewable energy products, industrial commodities, food and animal feed. Whereas the technologies to process sugar products from sweet ... -
A situational analysis of agricultural production and marketing, and natural resources management systems in West Kenya
(ILRI, 2015-10-30)The Western and Nyanza provinces that make up the West Kenya Humidtropics action site form part of the 20% arable land in Kenya. The region is characterized by high agricultural potential coupled with high population ... -
Smallholder market participation under transactions costs: Maize supply and fertilizer demand in Kenya
(Pergamon, 2008-08-08)This paper assessed the effects of transactions costs—relative to price and non-price factors—on smallholder marketed surplus and input use in Kenya. A selectivity model was used that accounts for the effects of transactions ... -
Sorghum is an important staple food crop in Kenya, but its yield is low due to many constraints which include diseases, drought, soil fertility, and pests, notably parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. Twenty elite sorghum genotypes and one resistant check were evaluated in three replications in a complete randomized design in Agar Gel (AG) experiment and randomized complete block design on selected Striga hotspot farms at Kadel and Nyahera in western Kenya. Significant differences (p<0.001) were realized both in the fields (plant height, dry shoot biomass yield, grain yield, field Striga count, and Striga damage ratings) and in the AG experiment with respect to maximum germination distance and numbers of induced germinated Striga seeds. Among the sorghum genotypes evaluated under field conditions, T53B, N57, N68, C26, IESV 92036-SH, T30B, and Uyoma 47 White genotypes had stable yields under Striga infestation in the two sites, whereas Nyadundo 1, Nyadundo 2, and Uyoma 8 were susceptible. In the AG experiment, E117B, T30B, Uyoma 8, Uyoma 42 STR, and T53B induced high numbers of germinated Striga seeds with maximum germination distances (MGD). In contrast, Uyoma 47 Brown, IESV 92038/2-SH, and IESV 92036-SH sorghum genotypes secreted low amounts of SLS suggesting resistance. This study has identified and selected four Striga tolerant (T53B, N68, N57, and T 30B) and resistant (C 26, Uyoma 47 Brown, IESV 92038/2-SH, and IESV 92036- SH) sorghum genotypes which can be utilized in further research programs or adopted to improve sorghum productivity in the highly Striga infested regions of western Kenya.
(Academic Journals, 2021)Sorghum is an important staple food crop in Kenya, but its yield is low due to many constraints which include diseases, drought, soil fertility, and pests, notably parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. Twenty elite sorghum ... -
Southwestern Kenya’s smallholder dairy farmers’ climate change perceptions, knowledge and adaptation
(African Journal of Agricultural Research, 2024-01)Globally, climate change (CC) adaptation is critical as CC compounds smallholder dairy farmers’ challenges. Farmers’ CC perceptions and knowledge could influence their CC adaptations. This study in Southwestern Kenya ... -
Sowing the seeds of transformative practice to actualize women’s rights to respectful maternity care: reflections from Kenya using the consolidated framework for imp...
(BioMed Central, 2017-12)Despite years of growing concern about poor provider attitudes and women experiencing mistreatment during facility based childbirth, there are limited interventions that specifically focus on addressing these issues. ... -
Stem bark extracts of Erythrina excelsa (Baker) and their biological activities
(2016)The species is known from Southern Nyanza, Migori in Kenya. The extraction of the stem bark was done sequentially using organic solvents starting with the least polar; n-hexane then dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and ... -
Striga management and the African farmer
(SAGE Publications, 2008-12)Striga asiatica and S. hermonthica are widespread plant parasites of cereals in Sub-Saharan Africa. In maize cropland alone, Striga has infested about 2.4 million ha, resulting in yield loss of 1.6 million tons per year, ... -
A ten-year study of Retinoblastoma in Uganda: An approach to improving outcome with limited resources
(Elsevier, 2021)Survival of children with cancer in resource-limited regions is very poor compared to better-resourced regions. Retinoblastoma (RB) is a childhood cancer that is commonly reported in many regions of Africa. RB may be safely ... -
UGbS-Flex, a novel bioinformatics pipeline for imputation-free SNP discovery in polyploids without a reference genome: finger millet as a case study
(BioMed Central, 2018-12-01)Research on orphan crops is often hindered by a lack of genomic resources. With the advent of affordable sequencing technologies, genotyping an entire genome or, for large-genome species, a representative fraction of the ... -
Unravelling the potential of sweet sorghum for sugar production in Kenya
